Multi Engine Float Plane - Course Outline

This course is three days long and will provide you with a multi engine sea plane rating.

Before applying you MUST have:

  • Valid US Government Photo ID (Drivers License or Passport)

  • Valid FAA 3rd Class Medical or higher

  • Valid FAA Multi Engine Airplane Land and Single Engine Sea Private or Higher Certificate

  • Current Logbook for sign-offs and showing a current BFR

  • A tail wheel endorsement


Please complete prior to your multi engine float plane course:

  1. Review the study guide and POH that will be emailed to you after you schedule a date.

  2. Become familiar with the appropriate FAA Airman Certification Standards for either the Private or Commercial rating being sought.

  4. Paperwork: It is a good idea to have your 8710 Pilot Application (click here) completed either preferably through IACRA (click here)

  5. Arrive early & Fly on day one with comfortable clothes, an open mind and a desire for adventure.

  6. Bring Pilot License, Photo ID, Logbook, Medical.


Course Description

Day 1: Early Morning

. Check in

. Review of regulations and requirements.

. Ground lesson

Flight Lesson - One

  • The first step is, a thorough pre-flight and discussion of differences in single vs. multi engine float planes.

  • The flight will last about 1.5 hours, focusing on:

  • Getting to know the airplane on water & in the air

  • Studying different types of water, landing opportunities, & characteristics of each

  • Take-offs & landings on the water

  • take a break for lunch and continue ground school.

    Day 1: Flight Lesson - Two

  • Review all you have learned on the first lesson

  • introduce more advanced maneuvers

  • step taxing

  • confined area takeoffs and landings.

  • aborted takeoffs and landings

Day 2: Flight Lesson - Three

  • Review and discuss any question you may have

  • Brief the flight and make sure we polish up the last lesson’s maneuvers and focus areas

  • beaching, sailing, docking, anchoring securing.

  • review everything necessary for checkride

  • log entries and endorsments.

  • Day 2 flight lesson -Four

  • brush up on all landings and maneuvers required for checkride

  • explore new lakes.

  • depending on student progress the instructor may elect to fly up to some high elevation lakes

  • focus of any areas that may need work

  • Day 3: Checkride

  • fly to the airport where you will meet the DPE

  • spend a few hours on the oral and practical exams.

  • you will then have your Multi Engine Seaplane Rating!

Cost:

  • $4900 - includes flight and ground instruction, use of a vehicle if you fly into E45 airport

  • There will be a $500 deposit taken by credit card over the phone upon scheduling a date.

  • an additional $900 (cash only) will be payable to the DPE on the day of the checkride.

  • if additional time is needed or you wish to pay for instruction by the hour the rate is $650/hr dual only.
